Synopsis
The Pope has passed away, and now Cardinal Lawrence, portrayed by Ralph Fiennes, must oversee the highly secretive process of selecting his successor. Several challenges complicate his task. Two opposing theological factions are vying for power—Cardinal Bellini (Stanley Tucci), who advocates for a more progressive stance, welcoming women and the LGBT community, and Cardinal Tedesco (Sergio Castellitto), a staunch conservative seeking to turn the church back to a more traditional, ancient path. Among the candidates is Cardinal Tremblay, played by John Lithgow, whose past scandal—one that may have led the late Pope to request his retirement—casts a shadow over his potential ascent.
